For questions about spiritual formation at Saint Mark’s, please contact our Director of Mission and Ministry, Mr. Michael LoSapio, at [email protected].
Our faith is a gift from the God who loves us, and it animates all we do. Our faith is a daily response to God’s love for us that impels us to love God and neighbor and live in right relationship as well. It is evident not only in our prayer, liturgies, and sacraments, but also in the way that we treat each other.
At Saint Mark’s High School, we celebrate Masses each month of the school year, and students have the opportunity to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent and Lent. Students pray every day in each class, and their athletic teams and clubs support the spiritual growth of the students as well.
Students participate in class retreats each year that deal with essential themes: the Mass, our relationship with God and others, forgiveness, and the call to lifelong discipleship.
Christian Service Requirement
Christian service develops character, but more importantly, it deepens our students’ awareness of those in need in our society. It promotes in them the understanding that we are all called to help our brothers and sisters in need, to love our neighbor, and to see Christ in every person.
Students will need to complete a minimum of twenty hours each year over the four years to graduate (total 80 hours of service). Students must complete at least 20 service hours in each of the categories below, with the other 20 hours being completed towards any service category they would like. Service hours must benefit a non-profit organization that serves people or the community and is aligned with the values and teachings of the Catholic Church.
There are three categories which students must provide service in: Church, School, and Community.
Twenty service hours are required for each school year. The following activities do not count towards service hours:
● Chores or other service done around one’s house or for a family member (parents, sibling, grandparent, legal guardian, aunt/uncle, cousin, etc.)
● Taking care of an animal, i.e. walking a dog, pet sitting, grooming a pet, etc.
● Service that is required as a part of/for membership in an organization (example: NHS)
● Services provided to any organization that is against Catholic Teaching and the Catholic Faith
HOW TO DOCUMENT SERVICE HOURS: All service hours must be recorded through MobileServe. Click here for instructions on how to use MobileServe. Students should select the option for email verification and, when able to, electronic signature. Students can access their MobileServe account by CLICKING HERE or by downloading the app onto one’s phone in the app store.
Students can begin accumulating service hours for an upcoming school year during the summer. Confirmation hours and service hours completed through a Saint Mark’s sport, club, or organization may be used. Students cannot be paid or compensated in any way for their service.
Students are encouraged to complete more than the allotted hours per year and will be recognized for doing so. For questions regarding service hours, please contact Mr. Michael Lo Sapio, Director of Mission and Ministry at [email protected].
